Workshop · Adelaide Hills · Mon–Sat

Every set, the answer to one player, one board, one quiet evening.

Since 2006, in our small workshop on the edge of the Adelaide Hills, we have turned jarrah, boxwood, ebony and Tasmanian oak into chess sets and boards. Each piece is shaped on the lathe, hand-finished, weighted and signed — no two are identical, and that is the point.

From timber to tournament piece.

  1. 01 · Selecting timber. We work only with slow-grown jarrah, boxwood, ebony and Tasmanian oak — air-dried for at least three years.
  2. 02 · Turning & carving. Each blank is shaped on the lathe and hand-finished to a 600-grit polish.
  3. 03 · Weighting & felting. Pieces are lead-weighted to tournament standard and bottomed with billiard-cloth baize.
  4. 04 · Oil & signature. Seven coats of pure tung oil, hand-rubbed between each. Every set is signed and numbered before it leaves us.
